I received a form letter from Harper's Magazine today--declined. Shot down by a red scribbled signature (completely unreadable) of an editorial assistant. Oh well... I'll wait to hear from six other places with my fingers crossed and my expectations moderate.

The rejections have to come before the acceptances. You're on your way. :)
Well... it IS Harper's. Try, try, try again :)
Eventually they'll want you. And sometimes you can send the exact same story (maybe with some minor refinements) and they'll be all over it. Think of publishing like auditioning to be in a play, or a reality TV show or something...
... rarely does rejection have anything to do with what you're capable of.
